Meaning:
The oldest city seal from the middle of the 13th century displayed St. Martin, the patron saint of the Archbishopric of Mainz, sitting on a throne in the middle of a city silhouette. Later seals and a banner from the 30-Years War (1618 - 1648) displayed the saint as knight with the beggar and parting his coat. The inescutcheon with the arms of the archbishopric was added later. Since the 15th century the city arms displayed the inescutcheon alone. The current arms are based on the second pattern of the city seal.
