Shield Gules, a calf passant Argent on a mount Vert.
Meaning:
The St. Martin church belonged to the Bursfelde Monastery in 1093. A settlement developed, which belonged to the Counts of Rothenburg, since 1223 to the Counts of Beichlingen. The settlement was called civitas in 1271 and oppidum in 1287. At that time it was walled. The city became a possession of the Counts of Hohnstein in 1348 and of the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1412/1417 as vassals of the Margraviate of Meißen. It belonged to the Electorate of Saxony until 1815, when it was acquired by Prussia. A local seal probably made around 1500 displayed the calf under two impending shields, at dexter displaying a lion, the family arms of the Counts of Schwarzburg and at sinister displaying a stag, the family arms of the Counts of Stolberg. The latter had pawned the city to the former. On a seal from 1608 the calf (German Plural: Kälber) was displayed alone as a canting element.
