Markranstädt Coat of Arms

Shield Or, on base Vert a bearded saint statant, nimbed Or, dressed Gules and coated Azure, holding a knife Argent in bend by his dexter hand and a piece of skin proper by his sinister arm.
Meaning:
The village of Altranstädt was first mentioned in 1091. In 1190 a new settlement, established by the Margraves of Meißen, developed, which was called a market town in 1292 and a city in 1354. Since 1285 the town belonged to the Bishopric of Merseburg. Due to its location at the crossroads between Leipzig and Frankfurt upon Main and between Schkeuditz and Zwenkau the city was a victim of warfare several times. The battle of Lützen was fought in 1632 in the direct neighbourhood. In the Great Northern War King Karl XII of Sweden had his headquarter in the city between 1706 and 1707. And after the battle of Leipzig in 1813 it was passed by defeated French troops. The saint on the arms is St. Bartholomew, the local patron saint, recognisable by his attribute, the knife, which had been the instrument of his excoriation, symbolised by a piece of his own skin.
