SG Lüchow Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale, at dexter Gules three lozenges Or ordered 2:1, at sinister Or a lion rampant Azure holding a key Azure in pale by his forepaws.
Meaning:
The dexter half is a modification of the arms of former Lüchow Comprehensive Municipality. The sinister half displays the arms of former Clenze Municipality (and also Clenze Comprehensive Municipality), but the colour of the key was changed from silver to blue. Clenze was first mentioned in 956 and already in the early Middle Ages it had its own council. The oldest seal of the council dates from the late 16th century. It already displayed the current arms, consisting of the lion of the Dukes of Lüneburg, rulers since 1289 over Clenze, and the key of the Abbey of Corvey. The abbey gained privileges in Kemnade and Clenze since 1150 by King Konrad III. Both comprehensive municipalities merged in 2006.

Lüchow Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale into Gules and Azure, over all three lozenges Or ordered 2:1.
Meaning:
The arms are based on the family arms of the Counts of Lüchow, who ruled the city in medieval times, and who became extinct in 1318. The oldest known seal of the city from the 13th century displayed already the current arms with the three lozenges, called "barleycorns" by the local people. Later seals and arms all displayed a castle with the arms of the counts in the gate. Since the middle of the 20th century the city again uses only the oldest arms.
