Meaning:
The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city with prints since 1317. Spangenberg was first mentioned as a city in 1261 and was allowed to use proper seals since then. The wheel is taken from the arms of the Treffurt-Spangenberg kin, which ruled Spangenberg in the 13th century. The sinister half shows a fossilised plant, locally known as "Spange", found frequently in the area and giving the city its name ("mountain of the fossilised plants"). The present image, however, does no longer look like the original fossile. The pattern of later seals and arms has never changed since then. The colours are known since 1621.
