Shield Vert, a cogwheel Argent, in base surrounded by antlers Or, over all a pick axe Argent and a spade Argent in saltire.
Meaning:
Since the 13th century there had been metallurgical processing factories at the base of Kanstein mountain. Ores had been smelted by the fuelwood of the Harz Forests and the water power of Innerste River. In the 16th century a Ducal factory was established. The cogwheel, pick axe and spade are referring to those factories. The antlers are symbolising forestry. The green colour is representing the forests of the Harz.
The market town gained proper arms in on 3 June 1949 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony and flag and city rights on 4 September 1951.

Lautenthal Coat of Arms
image by Jörg Majewski, 27 May 2007
Shield parted by a bar wavy Sable; above Or a demi-lion issuant Gules, armed and tongued Azure holding hammer and mallet sable by his forepaws; beneath plain Gules.
Meaning:
Lautenthal was one of the mining cities (German: Bergstädte) in the Harz region. The city was established in 1538 and their inhabitants got mining privileges in 1560, saying that any inhabitant could exploit the local ore mines. The demi-lion is a modification of the arms of the Dukes of the Welfen kin. The current arms are based on the oldest seal from 1603. In 1690 and on most later seal the lion was depicted guardant and cowering on the base (German: gekrüpft). Stadler displayed the current pattern in 1970 but armed and tongued Argent. Finally hamme and mallet are alluding to local mining and smelting factories.
Flag and banner were approved on 4 June 1938. The coat of arms was approved on 10 January 1603 and confirmed on 1 July 1972.
