Shield parted per fess; above parted per pale, at dexter Argent a throughout centred cross Sable, at sinister an 8-point star Sable; beneath Gules three water lily leaves Or.
Meaning:
The 1st quarter displays the arms of the Archbishopric and Electorate of Köln, which ruled the county until 1802. The 2nd quarter displays the arms of the Counts of Waldeck, who ruled parts of the county before the archbishops. The water lily leaves, in the area colloquially called "stag beetle's horns" (German: Schröterhörner) are representing the Duchy of Engern. Engern had been originally one of the three shires of the Duchy of Saxony, the name was later used for a much smaller area around Brilon, belonging to the Archbishopric of Köln.
