Flags of the Chinese Communist Party

In The Complete Guide to Flags [cra89], ©1989 William Crampton, this flag serves a couple other purposes. According to page 52, it's the flag of the Communist Party of Vietnam. And on page 53 it's also listed as the flag of Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

The flag of the Chinese Communist Party is prescribed in the party's statutes as follows:

Chapter XI - The Emblem and the Flag of the Party

Article 51. The emblem of the Chinese Communist Party is made of the sickle and hammer.

Article 52. The flag of the Chinese Communist Party is a red flag charged with the golden emblem of the party.

Article 53. The emblem of the party and the flag of the party are the symbols and distinctive marks of the Chinese Communist Party. The organizations of the party at any level and all the members of the party shall preserve the inviolability of the emblem and of the flag of the party. Those shall be made and used according to the regulations.

I was recently pointed to a law about the flag of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The law at http://news.xinhuanet.com/ziliao/2003-01/18/content_695383_1.htm  details the flag has a ratio of 2 by 3. On a grid of 24 by 36, the top hoist corner is 12 by 18; this is where the CPC emblem will rest. The emblem is 8 units high and 8 units wide; the emblem is placed 4 units away from the hoist and 3 units from the top edge. The colors are the same as the National Flag of China.

My Chinese is a little weak. Is this a modern flag, or the one used in the revolution by the Chinese Communist Party? For some reason I assumed they used a plain gold star on a red flag as the Party Flag, but please enligten me. When did they start using this flag?

Modern flag. The current law for the CPC flag was established in 1996. I am not sure when it was first established.

As I suspected, but it raises an interesting question, was there an original Chinese Communist Party flag and when and where? I'd imagine Mao used one, or perhaps many, but I don't recall seeing one. Perhaps the original party flag and "Red China" national flag were the same, as in the NSDAP/Third Riech or the CPSU/USSR.

The flag of the Young Pioneers, the Communist children's organisation, is red and carries a yellow star superimposed on a torch outlined in yellow, all set in the centre of the flag.

The flag of the Youth League, the Communist organisation for youth is also red. This flag has a yellow star within a circle set in the canton.
