The emblem shows the Lago Maggiore and the Monte Gambarogno after which the new commune was named. The fractions of Gambarogno are scattered on the northeastern bank of the lake and on the mountain.

On 25 April the new commune was formed of Caviano, Contone, Gerra (Gambarogno), Indemini, Magadino, Piazzogna, San Nazzaro, Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno) (see below).

As early as 1367 the Order of St John owned a commandery and a hospital which belonged to the Italian Langue. In 1932 permission was given to the former commandery to use the cross of the Order in its armorial shield.
