Vitebsk is quite well-known to certain sections of the general public as it was the birthplace of the great 20th Century artist Marc Chagall, and it figures in many of his works.

Vitebsk - Russian name of the city, Vicebsk - Byelorussian name of the city. In Soviet time all city names in USSR were transliterated to Latin characters from Russian spelling. After independence of Belarus the Byelorussian spelling "Vicebsk" became more popular in transliterating.
