The colours of the flag symbolize the contribution of the different races to the increase of the town; white for the Whites, red for the Indians and Mameluks, and black for the Blacks.

The coat of arms of Taboão da Serra is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 349 of 24 April 1970. "Rounded-off, in Portuguese style, argent, per fess, 1. An araucaria vert, 2a. A cog wheel sable, 2b. A representation of Mercury. The shield supported by two branches of coffee fructed proper. Beneath the shield a scroll argent inscribed with the motto 'LABOR OMNIA VINVET" surrounded by the years '1953' and '1960' all gules. The shield surmounted by an eight-towered mural crown argent."

The Portuguese shield recalls that Portugal is the root of Brazil. Argent is a symbol of beauty, triumph and purity. The araucaria represents the forests that cover a significant part of the municipal territory. The cog wheel represents the industrial potential of the municipality. Mercury represents commerce. The coffee branches represent the wealth of Brazil. The Latin motto reads "Faith Wins Over All". The years "1953" and "1960" are those of the establishment of the district and of the municipality, respectively. The mural crown is a symbol of municipal emancipation.
