The municipality of Potim (19,413 inhabitants in 2010; 4,465 ha) is located in the Paraíba Valley, 170 km of São Paulo. Potim is separated from Aparecida by river Paraíba do Sul. The district of Potim was established by State Law No. 3,198 of 23 December 1981, as part of the municipality of Guaratinguetá. The municipality of Potim was established by State Law No. 7,664 of 30 December 1991, following a plebiscite organized on 19 May 1991.

The symbols of Potim are prescribed in Article 2 of the Municipal Constitution as "the flag, the coat of arms and the anthem, established by Municipal Law and representative of its culture and history".

The flag is a white cross on a red field with the municipal arms centred on a white square on point.

The cross symbolizes the peaceful and Christian spirit of the people. White is a symbol of peace, purity, chastity, truth and frankness. Red is a symbol of joy, life, heath, courage, firmness, generosity, as well as of the blood shed by Jesus Christ, the patron saint of the municipality.

The flag has for dimensions 14 units x 20 units. The white stripes are 4 units in width. The lozenge starts from the second and five units in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, respectively.. The coat of arms covered a square area of 6 units x 6 units.

The shrimp represented in the first quarter of the shield makes the arms canting, the name of the municipality coming from a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "the land of the red shrimps". The fess wavy in base must represent river Paraíba.
