About the Flag

The municipality of Macatuba (16,246 inhabitants in 2010; 22,618 ha) is located in central western São Paulo State, 310 km km of São Paulo.

Macatuba was founded around 1900, as the village of Santo Antonio do Tanquinho. The district of Bocayuva was established by State Law No. 1,337 on 7 December 1912. Part of the municipality of Ubirama (today, Lençóis Paulista), the district was named for the journalist and politician Quintino Antônio Ferreira de Sousa Bocaiúva (1836-1912), the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Brazil (1889-1891), President of the Rio de Janeiro State (1900-1903), and Vice-President of the Senate (1909-1912). The municipality of Bocaiúva was established by State Law No. 1,975 of 1 October 1924, inaugurated on 1 February 1925, and renamed Macatuba by State Decree-Law No. 14,334 of 30 November 1944. The name of the municipality means "rich in macaw palms" (Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Mart.) in Guarani.

The symbols of Macatuba are prescribed in Article 2 of the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 5 December 2002, as "the flag, the coat of arms and the anthem".

The flag is green with a broad black diagonal stripe outlined in white. In the middle of the flag is placed a white disk charged with the municipal coat of arms. The drawing on the municipal website shows the flag with the diagonal stripe descending from the upper hoist to the lower fly. This is confirmed by a video of the 2009 civic parade. However, a video of the 2009 patriotic ceremony (see below) clearly shows the flag with the diagonal stripe ascending from the lower hoist to the upper fly (displayed below).

Macatuba was awarded the title of "National Capital of Patriotism" by State Law No. 2,266 of 25 September 2008. Every 19 December - the Brazilian Flag Day - since 2008, Macatuba has been organizing, in co-operation with the military authorities, a "ceremony of incineration of the worn flags". After a parade by the youth of the town of the national flag, of the flags of all Brazilian States and of the municipal flag, the national flag is lowered down, folded and burned in a specific urn. A brand new flag is then hoisted. The ceremony is organized by "Patriotismo", an organization founded on 1 September 2005 in Macatuba.
