Itaju was founded in 1898 by Joaquim Negrão and Bento Cardoso, who
offered a piece of land to erect a chapel dedicated to St. Sebastian.
The district of Buenópolis was established by Law No. 1,380 of 14
August 1913, as part of the municipality of Bariri, and renamed Itaju
by Law No. 1,828 of 21 November 1921.

The flag of Itaju is presented on the Símbolos Municipais Brasileiros
blog as vertically divided white-red (1:2), with the municipal coat of
arms placed in the white stripe and a white calvary surmounted by
three white stars in the red stripe. I have not found any other source
showing the flag.
