The municipality of Cândido Mota (29,911 inhabitants in 2010; 59,630 ha) is located 430 km northwest of São Paulo. The municipality is made of the districts of Cândido Mota, Frutal de Campo (2,072 inh.; established on 30 December 1953 by Law 2,456), Santo Antônio do Paranapanema (694 inh.; est. on 23 December 1981 by Law No. 3,198) and Nova Alexandria (1,029 inh.; est. on 23 December 1981 by Law No. 3,198).
Cândido Mota emerged as a settlement known in 1814-1920 as Posto Jacu, Parada do Jacu, or Chave, established by Colonel Valêncio Carneiro de Castro, who had explored the region since 1890. The place was renamed Cândido Mota in 1920, when granted the status of town. The district of Cândido Mota was established on 24 December 1921 by Law No. 1,831. The municipality of Cândido Mota was established on 28 December 1923 by Law No. 1,956, seceding from the municipality of Assis.
The flag of Cândido Mota, designed by José Gonçalves Maroubo, is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 54 of 3 December 1970. The flag is white with the municipal coat of arms in canton, two broad green horizontal stripe in the second and third quarters, and three green stars in the fourth quarter.
The white field symbolizes peace. The green stripes represents the fields and agriculture. The three stars represent the three powers - legislative, executive and legal.
The coat of arms of Cândido Mota, designed by José Gonçalves Maroubo, is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 56 of 7 December 1970. "Quarterly by a cross or, 1. Gules a locomotive argent, 2. Azure, 3. Gules, 4. Azure a pair of scales argent, the base wavy argent and azure All over a handshake per bend sinister. The shield surmounted by a mural crown or. The shield supported dexter by a branch of coffee fructed proper and sinister by a branch of cassava proper. Below the shield a scroll gules inscribed with the motto 'UNIO FIDES LABOR IUSTITIA' [United by Faith, Work and Justice] in letters argent."
The handshake involves an aristocratic and a worker's hand.
The waves represent river Paranapanema.
The cross, the locomotive and the scales must represent the three
elements of the motto.
