The municipality of Araçatuba (183,441 inhabitants in 2010; 11,674 ha) is located 520 km of São Paulo.

The flag of Araçatuba is prescribed by Municipal Decree No. 219, adopted in 1974. The Decree explicitly says that the flag should have nine horizontal stripes, starting - and ending - with a white stripe.

A flag with eight instead of nine horizontal stripes was spotted in June 2009 by Jorge Henrique Silveira, who reported the mistake to the local press.
