Tarabai was founded in 1939 by João Pereira da Silva on a plot purchased from Alvino Gomes Teixeira, Engineer at the Municipality of Presidente Prudente, The plot was located in the Limoeiro borough of Presidente Prudente. Since most colonists were Italians, the place was named Nova Itália. The new settlement was initiated by João Boff, who started the building of his house on 15 August 1939. The next years, President Getúlio Vargas forbid the use of the word "Itália" in Brazil; upset, Boff returned to the town he had previously founded, Pompéia, and sold Nova Itália to the Spanish colonist Ulpiano Sevilha. The new owner renamed the town Nova América. The district of Nova América was established in 1949 and renamed Tarabai in 1953, as a tribute to Felício Tarabay, President of the Council Municipal of Presidente Prudente (1948-1949) and Mayor of Presidente Prudente (1933-1934; 1947), and Chief of Staff of Governor of São Paulo Adhemar Pereira de Barros.. The municipality of Tarabai was inaugurated on 21 March 1965.
The symbols of Tarabai were designed by Lauro Ribeiro Escobar.
The flag is in dimensions 14 units x 20 units, blue with a white triangle of 17 units in length [85% of the flag's length]], charged with a red triangle of 12 units [60% of the flag's length] in length, itself charged with a white triangle of 9 units in length [45% of the flag's length]. The municipal coat of arms is placed near the hoist.
The coat of arms is "An Iberic shield azure [argent on the drawing] a bee cantoned with four fleurs-de-lis all argent a bordure chequy gules and argent. The shield surmounted by an eight-towered mural crown argent ports sable. The shield supported dexter by a plant of cotton and sinister by a plant of maize the two proper. Beneath the shield a scroll azure inscribed with the municipality's name in letters sable."
The Iberic shield, used in Portugal at the time of discovery of Brazil, evokes the first colonizers and builders of the country. Azure is a symbol of justice, beauty , sweetness, nobleness,, vigilance, serenity, constancy, incorruptible firmness, dignity, zeal and loyalty. The bee is a symbol of activity, labour, industry, parsimony, foresight and sweetness. The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of the Blessed Virgin, the municipality's patron saint. Argent is a symbol of felicity, purity, temperance,, beauty, truth, frankness, integrity and friendship. The bordure is a symbol of protection. The chequy pattern recalls the division of the land into plots during the formation of the early settlement. Gules is a symbol of audacity, valour, courage, nobleness, magnanimity, triumph, honour and intrepidity. The mural crown is a symbol of municipal emancipation. The open ports are a symbol of hospitality. The plants of cotton and of maize emphasize the fertility of the soil of Tarabai.
