São Vicente is one of the suburban municipalities that surrounds the big metropolis of São Paulo, occupying an area of 148 sq.km (rather small for Brazilian standards) inhabited by nearly 315,000 people. It bears the distinction of having been the very first town founded by the Portuguese in the Americas, back in 1532.
