The municipality of Peruíbe (59,793 inhabitants in 2010; 32,621 ha) is located in coastal São Paulo State, 140 km of São Paulo.Peruíbe originates in São João de Perohybe, a colony ("aldeia") established by the Society of Jesus to settle and evangelize the natives of the region. The municipality of Peruíbe was established by State Law No. 2,582 of 18 February 1959, seceding from Itanhaém. The municipality was granted the title of "Sea Resort" on 22 June 1974; the 18 beaches located on the municipal territory stretch over 32 km.
Article 4 of the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 5 April 1990 and last amended on 26 January 2012, prescribes the symbols of Peruíbe, without further description, as "the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem".

The coat of arms pictures quite realistically the local landscape - compare with the photo available on Wikimedia Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peruibe_beach.JPG
The mural crown usually surmounting the shield of Brazilian municipal
arms is replaced here by a representation of the ruins of the church
erected by the Jesuits on the Abarebebê rock. This church is often
considered as the first Christian sanctuary built in Brazil.
