The municipality of Witmarsum (3,998 inhabitants in 2020; 15,080 ha) is
located 250 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Witmarsum was established in
1924 by Paul Zerna, August Langhorst and Helmuth Teosowki. The three German
colonists, who had fought in Africa during the First World War, named the place
Nova África. Six years later, the place was settled by Ukrainian Mennonites, who
renamed it Witmarsum, as a tribute to the place of birth of Menno Simons
(1496-1561), the Friesian town of Witmarsum.
The district of Witmarsum was
established within the municipality of Presidente Getúlio by Municipal
Resolution No. 7 promulgated on 24 April 1957, to be elevated a municipality by
State Law No. 826 promulgated on 17 May 1962, and inaugurated on 15 June 1962.
