The municipality of Salto Veloso (4,616 inhabitants in 2016; 10,507 ha) is
located 430 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Salto Veloso was colonized by
Italian families coming from South San Catarina and the Serra Gaúcha. The place
was named for its first inhabitant, caboclo Antônio José Veloso, who established
in the late 19th century his residence near a waterfall ("salto"). His ranch
soon became a popular place among tropeiros.
