The municipality of Morro Grande (2,888 inhabitants in 2019; 25,647 ha) is
located on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, 250 km south-west of
Florianópolis.
Morro Grande was established around 1918 by families of
Italian origins coming from the neighboring towns of Morro da Fumaça, Urussanga,
Içara and Criciúma.
The district of Morro Grande was established, within the
municipality of Meleiro, by State Law No. 777 promulgated on 1 December 1961, to
be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 8,559 promulgated on 30 March 1992.

The flag of Morro Grande is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 78 promulgated on
13 May 1994.
Article 2.
The flag of the municipality is composed of
the blue, yellow and red colors, arranged in three stripes, in the upper part a
blue right-angled triangle, in the center, a yellow hexagonal polygon charged
with the coat of arms of the municipality, and in the lower part, a red
right-angled triangle.
§1. The blue color symbolizes the sky and pure
freshwater, as an element required for life.
§2. The yellow color symbolizes
crops and natural resources.
§3. The red color symbolizes the force and
courage of people conquering their ideals.
§4. The flag of the municipality
shall be, officially, 1.30 m in length on 0.90 in width.

The coat of arms of Morro Grande is
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 79 promulgated on 13 May 1994.
Article 2.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Morro Grande is composed of a shield
superimposed to a white oval figure.
§1. In the upper part, a sinuous line,
symbolizing the hills, the Serra Geral and Morro do Realengo.
§2. Beneath,
plants representing the rainforest and reforestation.
§3. In the center, on
the left, a man, plants and animals representing labor, agricultural production,
and animal breeding.
§4. In the center, on the right, a cross, as the highest
symbol of the Christian religion and of people's faith, which is venerated as
the municipality's patron.
§5. Beneath, on the left, cogwheels representing
industry in the municipality.
§6. On the right, beneath the cross, a
cultivated area with machines representing mechanized agriculture.
§7. In the
center, a blue stripe representing the springs and rivers in the municipality.
§8. In the lower part, a stripe with fluctuating points, inscribed with "MORRO
GRANDE - 30/03/92", the date of political emancipation.
§9. The colors of the
arms are green, brown, blue, black, yellow, red and gray.
