The municipality of Maravilha (24,345 inhabitants in 2015; 16,944 ha) is
located 620 km west of Florianópolis.
Maravilha wes established in 1951
by the Companhia Territorial Sul Brasil, established in 1925. Originally known
as Mancha da Pinhais (Pinewood), the place was renamed to Maravilha (Wonderful)
to attract more colonists. The local tradition says that the new name was coined
by a group of hunters viewing the then wild landscape from the top of the hill
that overlooks the town.
The establishment of Maravilha is credited to José
Leal Filho (1902-1972), also a noted poet under the name of Juca Ruivo.
Appointed administrator by the colonizing company, he promoted a harmonious
development of the town, pushing the erection of churches, schools and a
hospital.
The municipality of Maravilha was established by State Law No. 348
promulgated on 21 June 1958, and inaugurated on 27 July 1958.
Maravilha
was proclaimed Children's Town by Federal Law No. 12,596 promulgated in 2012.
The town has been informally known as Children's Capital since 1970, when a
population census confirmed the high rate of birth and education in the town.
Visitors were already amazed by the first civic parade organized on 7 September
1954, which involved the municipality's numerous schools and children. Officials
invited in subsequent parades described the town's streets as "adorned with
children".
