The municipality of Grão-Pará (6,228 inhabitants; 33,816 ha) is located 200
km south-west of Florianópolis. The municipality is composed of the districts of
Grão-Pará (seat), Aiurê (est. by State Law No. 853 promulgated on 14 November
1962) and Invernada (est. by State Law No. 852 promulgated on 14 November 1962).
Grão-Pará was established on 2 December 1882 as the central seat of Colônia
Imperial. The colony was named for Pedro de Alcântara of Orléans-Braganza
(1875-1940), Prince of Grão-Pará, the son of Gaston, Count of Eu and Isabel,
Princess Imperial of Brazil.
Incorporated to the district of Orleans, then
part of Tubarão, in 1888, the colony was managed by the American engineer
Charles Mitchell Smith Leslie. Grão-Pará was elevated to a district of Orleans
by Municipal Law No. 3, promulgated on 20 May 1914, and a municipality by State
Law No. 348 promulgated on 21 June 1958 and inaugurated on 20 July 1958.
