The municipality of Flor de Sertão (1,588 inhabitants in 2010; 5,888 ha) is
located 680 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Flor do Sertão was named for
a tree with profuse yellow flowers ("flores") found by early explorers in the
middle of the rainforest; accordingly, yellow ipê was proclaimed the municipal
tree.
The place was first settled in 1952 by Otávio Cenedeze, Waldemar
Silveira Ramos and Geraldo Bresolin, coming from Guaporé, Casca and Serafina
Corrêa, respectively.
Flor de Sertão was elevated to a district of Maravilha
on 14 December 1961. The municipality of Flor do Sertão was established by State
Law No. 9,992 promulgated on 29 September 1995, and inaugurated on 1 January
1997.

The flag and arms of Flor de Sertão are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 14
promulgated on 22 May 1997.
Article 2.
The municipal coat of arms of
Flor de Sertão shall have the following characteristics, design, colors,
heraldic details and meaning.
I - The Samnit shield, used to represent
the arms of Flor de Sertão, was the first style of shield introduced to
Portugal by French influence, inherited by the Brazilian heraldry to evoke the
colonizing race and main builder of the nation.
II - The shield is
subdivided by five rays on a celestial blue background, symbolizing the sky of
the new municipality. The shining rising sun emitting the rays symbolizes life
and rising light with equality for all citizens.
III- In the first lower
subdivisions, flowers ["flores"] characterizing the name of the new
municipality, "Flor do Sertão".
IV - In the second subdivision, a tractor
and a plow, symbolizing the main agricultural machines.
V - In the third
subdivision, a milk cow, a pig and a chicken, representing animal breeding and
milk production, which contribute to the income of Flor de Sertão's farmers.
VI - In the fourth subdivision, an orange tree with ripe fruit and Brazilian
pines symbolizing the reforestation area and the rainforest.
VII - In the
fifth subdivision, a factory and a cogwheel, symbolizing industry.
VIII -
Fish farming, an alternative source of income, is symbolized by a barrage and a
fish.
IX - Two maize plants, each with two ripening cobs, interlaced with a
tobacco plant, bean pods and wheat plants, surround the shield, representing
the municipality's main sources of income.
X - Beneath the shield, a red
scroll inscribed with the municipality's date of creation at one end, "29/09",
and "1995" at the other end.
XI - A golden yellow mural crown, with three
towers, superimposed in perspective view to the shield, as the universal symbol
of domain's coats of arms and recalling the struggle for emancipation and
development of the municipality.
XII - The red open gate symbolize the ideal
of liberty and equality among citizens.
Article 12.
The municipal
flag of Flor do Sertão is composed of three specified colors.
a) Spring
green. Represented by a right-angled triangle placed horizontally, 20 units in
length on 21.5 units in hypotenuse and 9.3 units in width. Green represents
forests, pastures and agriculture. Green is also the symbol of hope and
aspiration to a promising future for all citizens.
b) Red. Represented by a
right-angled triangle, in the upper part, 9.3 units in width, 21.5 units in
hypotenuse and 20 units in length. Red is a symbol of people's bravery and
courage. Red also represents the flag of Santa Catarina.
c) White.
Represented by a diagonal stripe of 4.7 units in width and 21.5 units in
length. A white circle is superimposed to the green, red and white colors in
the flag's center, inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
Article 15.
The author of the municipal symbols (coat of arms and flag) of Flor do Sertão
is the heraldic designer Jair Lemes de Rosa, from São Lourenço (Santa Catarina)
