The municipality of Corupá (15,337 ihabitants in 2018; 40,500 ha) is located
200 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Corupá was established in 1895 by
Companhia Hanseática de Colonização, as Hansa Humboldt, named for the German
naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. The very first settlers, Otto Hillbrecht, his
son and Wilhelm Ehrhardt purchased plots No. 6, 7 and 1, respectively. From
Germany, they disembarked in São Francisco do Sul on 30 June 1897; on 7 July
189, they sailed on a boat via river Itapocu until the confluence of rivers
Humboldt and Novo. They eventually walked a forest trail until a hut where they
were welcomed by land surveyor Eduard Kirsch.
The district of Hansa
Humboldt was established on 11 May 1908, to be renamed to Corupá by State Law
No. 941 promulgated on 31 December 1943. The municipality of Corupá was
established by State Decree-Law No. 348 promulgated on 21 June 1958, and
inaugurated on 25 July 1958.
