The municipality of Cocal do Sul (16,684 inhabitants; 7,854 ha) is located
200 km of Florianópolis.
Cocal do Sul was established in 1885 by Italian,
Polish and Russian colonists, as a community depending on the nucleus of Accioly
de Vasconcelos. Cocal was elevated to a district of Urussanga by Municipal
Resolution No. 15 issued on 2 January 1904. The municipality of Cocal do Sul was
established on 26 September 1991.
Cêramica Cocal was acquired in 1959 by
Maximiliano Gaidzinski, a shareholder of Cêramica Santa Catarina. He
subsequently renamed the company to Eliane Revestimentos Cerâmicos (Eliane Floor
Ceramics) for his youngest daughter Eliane. Now part of Mohawk Industries,
Eliane operates six operational units, four of them in Cocal do Sul. Production
of floor tile, equivalent to 36 million m2 per year, is sold in more than 80
countries, included 15,000 shops in Brazil.

Divided on an enhanced bend, red-white-green, the white stripe containing six narrow bands, two yellow, two blue and two yellow, with the municipal arms in the centre on a white disk.

The flag and arms of Cocal do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 4
promulgated on 16 March 1993.
Article 2.
I - The coat of arms is
formed of a shield surmounted by four towers, in its lower part, a light green
scroll with the municipality's name and dates of foundation and administrative
inauguration; on its sides, branches of rice and peach, joint to a coconut
palm.
Symbolic interpretation of the arms.
The four towers, black and
gray, symbolize immigration and races' union.
The coconut palms ("coqueiros")
represent the origin of the municipality's name and its forest.
Peach
symbolize fruit and fresh vegetable production.
Rice symbolize grain
production.
The cogwheel and the chimney featured in the shield's center
represents force and industrial dynamism, the chimney, gray and black with a
red flame, the cogwheel, black.
The lower left, red floor, symbolizes
azulejos, tiles and other ceramic products, the strongest source of income for
the municipality.
The lower right, straw yellow honeycomb symbolizes the
enhanced honey production, also meaning perfection, work and cooperation.
Above the floor and honeycomb, two diagonal cyan blue stripes, representing
Cocal do Sul's two rivers, Cocal and Tigre.
Forests and pastures represented
by two flag green stripes surmounting the two rivers and arranged the same way.
III - The flag is composed of the red and green colors, separated by a
white parallelogram charged in the center with the coat of arms and six
diagonal stripes, four yellow and another two azure, interrupted by the white
circle that inscribes the coat of arms.
Meaning of the colors.
Scarlet red - Work, dynamism and perseverance of Cocal do Sul's inhabitants.
Flag green - Forest, pastures and all resources supplied by agriculture.
Lime yellow - Mining resources, as well as the products of industry and
agriculture.
Cyan blue - Rivers Cocal and Tigre, as well as their sources.
Representation of nations.
Italians - by red, white and green.
Poles
- by red and white.
Portuguese - by red and green.
