The municipality of Rio do Oeste (7,094 inhabitants in 2010; 24,564 ha) is
located 250 km west of Florianópolis.
Rio do Oeste was established in
1912 at the confluence ("barra") of Rio das Pombas (Doves' River) and Rio do
Oeste (West River), therefore its early name, Barra das Pombas. In the late
1920s, the place was renamed to Villa Adolfo Konder, for the President (~
Governor) of Santa Catarina (1926-1930). The name of Rio do Oeste was adopted in
the 1930s.
The district of Rio do Oeste was established by State Law No. 247
promulgated on 30 December 1948, to be elevated a municipality on 23 June 1958,
which was inaugurated on 23 July 1958.
