Municipality

The municipality of São José do Herval (2,568 inhabitants; 10,152 ha)is located 250 km north of Porto Alegre.

São José do Herval was originally known as Burro Morto (Dead Donkey), being a resting place for tropeiros and muleteers heading from Lajeado to Soledade. The settlement was subsequently renamed for its patron saint, St. Joseph, and mat ("erva-mate") cultivation.
