The municipal flag and coat of arms were approved by Decree No. 023/81.
The flag is divided into quarters by a St. Andrew's cross evoking the
Christian faith of the people. The green field symbolizes the rich
vegetation of the municipality. The white stripes with blue overstripes
forming the cross symbolize the radiation of municipal power throughout the
municipal territory, while the gold rectangle symbolizes the city proper,
seat of the municipality, and the coat of arms on the center represents the
municipal government. The coat of arms is green, symbolizing the forest,
with a wavy silver and blue fess representing the Rio Teles Pires, principal
river of the municipality. In chief is a gold five-pointed star
representing the Companhia Colonizadora Sinop, founder of the city, and in
base a cogwheel symbolizes industrial activity. Flanking the shield are a
coffee branch and two stalks of rice, representing the two principal
agricultural products of Sinop. The scroll bears the name of the
municipality and the dates 1974 (when it was founded) and 1979 (when it
achieved municipal autonomy).
