The municipality of São João do Paraíso (23,417 inhabitants in 2014; 19,256
ha) is located on the border with the State of Bahia, 780 km of Belo Horizonte
and 180 km south-west of Vitória da Conquista.
São João do Paraíso was
established, as the district of São João da Raposa, part of the municipality of
Rio Pardo. The district was named for its patron saint (St. John) and for the
most common animal ("raposa", "fox") found in the region. In 1888, Raimundo
Meireles, a descendant of an earlier colonist, offered a plot located near river
São João to erect a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The village
turned into a regional center of trade, to be renamed to São João do Paraíso.
The municipality of São João do Paraíso was established in 1943.
