The coat of arms was approved by the town council in June 1972. The official certificate of grant from the Burgenland state government, dated July 4, 1973, describes it as a fire hook. The municipality's website mentions the possibility that the symbol could be a pruning knife, a reminder of the town's time as the largest wine-growing community in the Holy Roman Empire during the 17th century. The count's coronet is a reference to the Lords of Mattersburg, who built the castle in the 13th century. City colours: red and white.
Until 1924, when Mattersburg received its town charter, its name was Mattersdorf.
