Luanda is the capital and largest city in Angola, and the country's most populous and important city, primary port and major industrial, cultural and urban centre. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean and is the country's chief seaport and administrative centre. It is the third most populous Portuguese-speaking city in the world, after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janerio in Brazil.

In 1964 the flag of Luanda was changed to follow the traditional Portuguese pattern as described in Decree (Portaria) n.º 20831 / September 30, 1964. It is a typical Portuguese municipal flag with the coat of arms centered on a yellow and purple gyronny of eight ( indicating city status for the municipality) surmounted by a yellow mural crown.
The arms and flag are described as follows:
filetado também de prata;
Luanda».
Bandeira - Gironada de oito peças de amarelo e púrpura. Cordões e borlas de
ouro e púrpura. Lança e haste douradas.
